Today, after everyone had finished their work, I let a few of the boys look at tattoos on the computer. (I am really hoping our nosy IT guys are too busy to look at my surfing habits right now.) I think tats are cool, and I acknowledge that the kids do too. It was a great opportunity to talk about it in a way where they would listen to me. We talked about what is cool, and what is not. They didn’t like the tats on scalps; I don’t like tats on hands or necks, where they limit career opportunities. We talked about how to get one safely, and how to go about learning how to have a career in that area. I have an artist who would be really good at it. I’ve got to research it a bit more so that he doesn’t get ripped off by some two-bit school.

Indeed. Be very wary of any place that advertises tattoo apprenticeships. It’s something that there’s really no such thing as an actual school for it. The artists I know all learn through an apprenticeship with an established artist, and it’s something they have to arrange with the artist themselves. And it’s typical that they have to pay the artist for the privilege of being an apprentice.
