I just got back from Walmart, where I did our Pre-Approved By The Probation Officer shopping for the week. The cashier was very conscientious, putting all of the produce in the same bag, etc., instead of randomly throwing stuff together. We began to talk, and she told me that her evaluation would suffer because the Walmart cash register times how fast their cashiers run items through the check-out. So there is all of this stress, and loss of raises, simply because some idiot might have to wait an extra minute in the check-out line.
I had no idea. It is just so different from Mexico, where you waited in line, and just didn’t worry about how long it took. I was much more relaxed there, having learned how to wait in line patiently. So were the people who worked the cash registers. They never seem stressed out. It is also different from the post office, where apparently they have no such policy, and the postal worker took the time to show me a picture of her child while she was processing my packages, even though someone was in line behind me. It was just so human.
So, why do we want to turn people into fast processing machines and then spend money on studies dealing with stress and the health-care cost of this malady, and ways that it can be prevented? Unless you are the cashier at Walmart, of course.
We need to slow down.

ITK code for Singing The Sky:
Walmart’s corporate policies are wrong on so many levels … catering to humanity is not one their strong suits. Of course, they are not the only corporate entity who values their employees well-being with such little regard. Yes - we need to slow down - and priorities need to get shifted. JP
I agree, we need to slow down. The problem of course is that then everyone else passes you by, then we get jealous, and off we go again into the rat race trying to catch up!
It’s about the almighty dollar at work…not about people. Wal-Mart, especially, could give two shits less about their employees. “Rolling back prices.” Money-motivated jerks….
That stinks! It takes the human out of the job, and puts in a “robot.” Very sad.
